The correct option is D $- \frac{1}{2}$
$- 4 - (- 3 p) = - 5 p - 8$
$\Rightarrow - 4 + 3 p = - 5 p - 8$
Add $5 p$ and $4$ on both sides, we get
$- 4 + 3 p + 4 + 5 p = - 5 p - 8 + 5 p + 4$
$\Rightarrow 3 p + 5 p = - 8 + 4$
$\Rightarrow 8 p = - 4$
Divide by $8$ on both sides, we get
$\frac{8 p}{8} = - \frac{4}{8}$
$\Rightarrow p = - \frac{1}{2}$
