Solution

(i) (a) Inflation using CPI of Industrial workers

YearCPI of Industrial Workers (1982=100)Inflation Rate (in %) = A2A1A1×100199596313313100100×=213199697342342100100×=242199798366366100100×=266199899414414100100×=314199900428428100100×=328200001444444100100×=344200102463463100100×=363200203482482100100×=382200304500500100100×=400

(b) Inflation using CPI of Non-Manual Employees

YearCPI of Industrial Workers (1982=100)Inflation Rate (in %) = A2A1A1×100199596257257100100×=157199697283283100100×=183199798302302100100×=202199899337337100100×=237199900352352100100×=252200001350350100100×=250200102390390100100×=290200203405405100100×=305200304420420100100×=320

(c) Inflation using CPI of Agricultural Labourers

YearCPI of Industrial Workers (1982=100)Inflation Rate (in %) = A2A1A1×100199596234234100100×=134199697256256100100×=156199798264264100100×=164199899293293100100×=193199900306306100100×=206200001306306100100×=206200102309309100100×=209200203319319100100×=219200304331331100100×=231

(d) Inflation using WPI

YearCPI of Industrial Workers (1982=100)Inflation Rate (in %) = A2A1A1×100199596121.6121.6100100×=21.6199697127.2127.2100100×=27.2199798132.8132.8100100×=32.8199899140.7140.7100100×=40.7199900145.3145.3100100×=45.3200001155.7155.7100100×=55.7200102161.3161.3100100×=61.3200203166.8166.8100100×=66.8200304175.9175.9100100×=75.9

(ii) The inflation rate calculated using CPI industrial worker with the base year 1982 is the highest and inflation rate calculated using WPI with the base year 1993-94 is the least.
(iii) No the index number are not comparable because of the following reasons:
(a) Base periods for CPI of industrial workers, urban non-manual workers, agricultural labourers and WPI are different.
(b) Commodities and their weightage in different index number may be different.
