Goitre is a condition where the thyroid glands swell up because they cannot synthesize thyroid hormones normally. Lack of iodine is the main cause for non-synthesis of the hormone. Lack of iodine in hilly regions is a common condition as a lot of iodine leaches out of the soils in hilly regions. Thus, food grown in the hills lack in iodine that causes goitre.
