Let x be the pencils that Ram has .

One less than twice the pencils that Ram has $\Rightarrow$ 2x -1

Gopi has 19 pencils which are one less than twice the pencils that Ram has. $\Rightarrow$ 2x -1 =19

$\Rightarrow$ 2x = 19+1

$\Rightarrow$ 2x = 20

Divide both the sides by 2 . we get..

x= 10
