During the process folliculogenesis (development of the follicle) takes place in the following sequence as given below.

Primordial follicle → Primary follicle → Secondary follicle → Tertiary follicle → Graafian follicle

Graafian follicle is the fully matured follicle that contains a large central follicular cavity (antrum) filled with a viscous liquid called liquor folliculi. Graafian follicle releases secondary oocytes from the ovary via a process called ovulation.

Each primary oocyte is surrounded by a layer of cells called granulosa cells thus it gets transformed into a primary follicle.

Primary follicles when they get surrounded by more layers of granulosa cells and new theca, they transform into secondary follicles.

Tertiary follicles are characterised by a fluid-filled cavity called the antrum having a well defined outer theca externa and inner theca interna.
