In the equation ax2 + bx + c = 0, a is the coefficient of x2. D is the disriminant b2 – 4 ac. Value of the coefficient of x2 decides whether the graph opens upwards or downwards. Positive 'a' implies upward opening parabola. Value of the discriminant decides the no. of roots of the quadratic equation. Negative 'D' implies no real roots, i.e. the curve doesn't intersect the x-axis.
