In the equation ax2 + bx + c = 0, a is the coefficient of x2. D is the disriminant b2 – 4 ac. Value of the coefficient of x2 decides whether the graph opens upwards or downwards. Negative 'D' implies no real roots, i.e. the curve doesn't intersect the x-axis.
