Graphite and diamond are crystalline allotropes of carbon. However, graphite has a lower melting point than that of diamond. This is because, in diamond, the carbon atoms are covalently bonded giving rise to 3-D rigid structure.

Whereas in graphite, the hexagonal layers of carbon atoms are held together by weak van der Waals force.
