Question

Gravitational force on the surface of the moon is only 16 as strong as gravitational force on the earth. What is the weight in newtons of a 10 kg object on the moon and on the earth?

Solution

Mass of the object, m=10 kg

Acceleration due to gravity at earth, ge=9.8 ms2
Weight of the object on earth, W=mge=10×9.8=98 N

Acceleration due to gravity at moon, gm=16×9.8=1.63 ms2
Weight of the object on moon, W=mgm=10×1.63=16.3 N
