Question

Grease stains are removed from clothes by using ________.

Open in App
Solution

Grease stains contain fats or oily substances in them.

  • Chemically, these are non-polar substances.
  • According to the concept of like dissolves like, a non-polar substance is dissolved in a non-polar solvent and a polar substance is dissolved in a polar solvent.
  • As grease is non-polar, it gets dissolved in petrol which is also non-polar and hence leaves the clothes. Moreover, petrol is volatile and evaporates due to which it is used in dry-cleaning of clothes.

Therefore, grease stains are removed from clothes by using petrol.
