Question

Green plants use carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and return oxygen to the atmosphere, even then carbon dioxide is considered to be responsible for the greenhouse effect. Explain why?

Solution

Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere by respiration, burning of fossil fuels and decomposition of calcium carbonate during the manufacturing of cement. It is also released during volcanic eruptions.

When the use of fossil fuels is increased, a large amount of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere but all of them can not be used by plants for photosynthesis.

So, when the level of carbon dioxide increases, it disturbs the balance in the atmosphere. The increased amount of carbon dioxide in the air is mainly responsible for global warming.
