Question

H2O2 is decomposed to H2O and O, in the following sequence of reactions :
i) H2O2(aq)+I(aq)H2O(l)+IO(aq)
ii) H2O2(aq)+I(aq)H2O(l)+O2(g)+IO(aq)
(a) Write the chemical equation for the overall reaction.
(b) Identify the species that acts as a catalyst.
(c) Identify the intermediate.

Solution

Decomposition of H2O2 by I() :
Step 1 : H2O2+I()(aq)H2O+IO()(aq)
Step 2 : H2O2+IO()(aq)H2O2+O2+I()(aq)
i) Overall reaction :
H2O2+I()(aq)+H2O2+IO()(aq)H2O+IO()(aq)+H2O+O2+I()(aq)
or, 2H2O22H2O+O2
b) Here I()(aq) is used as catalyst because in overall reaction there will no presence of I().
c) Here intermediate is IO().
