Question

H2O2H2O+O2
The rate constant of this reaction is 2×102 min1 (at certain temperature) and reaction is started with 0.5 M concentration of H2O2, after 23.03 min the reaction was suddenly stopped by lowering the temperature and remaining H2O2 was completely reacted with NaOCl, if number of moles of O2 produced in second reaction is 1x. Find x.
(Given : NaOCl+H2O2O2+NaCl+H2Olog1.5=0.2)

Solution

H2O2H2O+O2
NaOCl+H2O2O2+NaCl+H2O
In 1 min 0.02 mol/L H2O2 decomposes so in 20 min
k=2.303tlogaax
0.02=2.30323.03log0.5ax
0.02=2.30323.03log0.5ax
0.2=log0.5ax (take log1.5=2)
1.5=0.5ax
ax=0.51.5=13
13 mole H2O2 is left so 13 mole O2 is produced in second reaction
