H2O2 as a bleaching agent:

  • Hydrogen peroxide( H2O2) is known to act as a strong oxidizing agent both in basic and acidic mediums.
  • Therefore when it is been added to the clothes it helps in breaking the chemical bonds of the color-producing agents (Chromophores).
  • Hence, the visible light doesn't get absorbed which helps in the whitening of clothes.
  • H2O2 bleaches silk, wool, cotton.

H2O2H2O+[O]Nascentoxygen

Colouredsubstance+[O]Colourless
