Hemoglobin is an iron-containing oxygen-transport protein present in the blood. Haem is the iron-containing portion of the hemoglobin. It is mainly responsible for the transportation of oxygen gas. About 97% of oxygen binds to haem part of hemoglobin and is transported as oxyhemoglobin in RBCs of the blood. The remaining 3% is transported through the plasma. About 20-25% of C02 is transported by RBCs as carbaminohemoglobin, about 72% of it is transported as bicarbonate via blood plasma
