Half the perimeter of a rectangular garden, whose length is 16 m more than its width, is 20 m. Find the dimensions of the garden.

Let the length of the garden be x and the breadth be y.

Then, half the perimeter =12×2(x+y)=20

x+y=20(1) (1Mark)

Also given, length of garden is 16m more than its width.

xy=16(2) (1Mark)

Adding (1) and (2),

2x=36x=18 (0.5Marks)

Substituting x=18 in (2),

18y=16y=2 (0.5Marks)

The length is 18 m and breadth is 2 m.
