Question

Halophytes may show cell pressure very much higher than atmospheric pressure. Explain how this can happen?

Solution

Halophytes

Halophytes are plants that grow in saline environments that have low water potential compared to other cells. This may cause exosmosis, therefore to prevent the loss of water they have adaptations that allow them to store salt in their cells.

Osmotic pressure

The excess salt in their cells makes them hypertonic compared to the surrounding salt water. This helps them maintain an internal osmotic pressure which is greater than atmospheric pressure.
