magnetic compass indicates the direction of magnetic field and aligned himself along the direction of magnetic field. since, north pole of magnet is attracted by north pole of earth hence, if he put compass in vertical plane than needle of compass will point downward. and it he hold compass horizontal direction than needle will not stop in any direction.
