Hardy - Weinberg equilibrium states that allele frequency in a given population is always constant from one generation to another. This equilibrium can be affected if the gene pool of the given population is affected due to gene flow, genetic drift, mutations etc. Hardy - Weinberg equilibrium is based on the fact that the gene pool will always remain constant until it gets affected by external forces or in other word it is based on genetic equilibrium.
