Question

HCl + NaOH ----------> NaCl + H2O is neutralization reactio but is it a double displacement reaction? If yes then why?

Open in App
Solution

It is a acid base reaction, therefore neutralization will take place.
Acid is a compound with regard to this question which loses its H+ ion and form a conjugate base.
Base is a compound which tends to lose its OH- ion and form conjugate acid .
HCl which is a strong acid tends to lose H+ and forms a conjugate base Cl- which is attacked by Na+ ions left which is rendered by the loss of OH - from NaOH which is a strong base .Hence NaCl which is a salt along with water will be formed .
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O
It's double replacement reaction.
AB + CD = AD + CB
Here A is H, B is Cl.
C is Na, D is OH.

It's also acid-base reaction too.

Precipitate is also formed in this reaction
