Question

Hema, Shefali and Molly each drew two of these card.

Shefali said, " the sum of my number is 3/2 ."

Hema said, "the sum of my number is 1. "

Molly said, "the difference of my numbers just less than one."

The cards are:

3/8, 1/4, 5/8, 5/4, 11/16, 13/8

Which card did each one have?

We can solve this question just by trial and error method
i.E. just try different combinations
thus we get the answers

for shefali s card:
he had a sum of 3/2
trying different sets we get (1/4)+(5/4)=(6/4)=3/2

so he took card (1/4) and (5/4)

for hema s card ;
she had a sum of 1

so by trail method we get (3/8)+(5/8)=(8/8)=1

thus she took the cards (3/8) & (5/8)

for molly s cards :
she had a difference of just less than one
thus by trail method we can see that
(13/8)-(11/16)=(26/16)-(11/16)=15/16 which is just less than one

so molly had the cards 13/8 & 11/16
