Solution

The correct option is A Nitrogen fixation
Reproduction refers to the process of production of new progeny either by sexual or asexual means; reproductive structures in BGA include akinete, exospores, endospores, conidia, etc but not heterocyst. Thus, option A is incorrect. Respiration refers to oxidation of six carbon sugar, glucose into carbon dioxide with release of energy; the released energy is used in ATP synthesis. This makes option B incorrect as heterocysts have photosystem I that generate ATP without photolysis. Ability to move from one place to other is termed as locomotion; option D is incorrect as BGA move through gliding. Heterocysts are larger cells with thick walls and one or more pores. They are the active site of protein synthesis and rich in nitrogenase and hydrogenase enzymes which in turn serve in nitrogen fixation. Thus, the correct answer is option C.
