Solution
The correct option is C Natural selection The high frequency of melanic moths near industrial regions was driven by natural selection. The usual form of peppered moths had light colouration which camouflaged with the colour of lichen growing on trees due to them being pollution free. With the industrial revolution, soot got deposited on the trees which lead to the death of lichens and simultaneously black coloured peppered moth became more prominent with their dark colour camouflaging with dark tree branches. This happened due to natural selection responsible for their survival. In a similar manner DDT was earlier used as an insecticide to control mosquito population but soon mosquitoes developed resistance to DDT and due to natural selection the population of theses resistant mosquitoes increased.
