Rivers carry water and nutrients to areas all around the earth. They play a very important part in the water cycle, acting as drainage channels for surface water. Rivers drain nearly 75% of the earth's land surface. Following are the ways in which a river helps our country with regard to the agricultural sector.
1) Rivers provide potable water fit for irrigation. Perennial rivers are a great source of water for irrigation throughout the year, with a string of canals taken out from them.
2) Rivers also replenish the natural groundwater storage. This water is pumped up for irrigation by individual farmers or groups of them.
3) During rains, the rivers carry productive soil from upper reaches and spread it on flood planes downstream. This increases farm production on the flood planes along the rivers.
