Highly reactivity metals such as sodium and potassium are extracted from their ores by the method of electrolytic reduction.
During this process, electric current is passed through the molten metal ore, the metal gets deposited on the cathode. During extraction of sodium from its salt, sodium chloide, the reactions that take place at the anode and cathode as follows:

Cathode: Na+ + e → Na(s)

Anode: 2Cl → Cl2(g) + 2e
