Question

Himalayas are called young fold mountains explain answer in points

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

The Himalayas are regarded as young fold mountains because :
  • They have been formed in the late Cretaceous-Tertiary Period i.e. relatively recently in the earth's history, compared to older mountain ranges like the Aravallis in India, and the Appalachian in the USA.
  • They are fold mountains because they are formed due to the action of compressive forces involved in the collision of the two continental plates involved, the Asian and the Indian/Australian.
