Complete digestion of food occurs in the small intestine. The intestinal juice which is released by the wall of the small intestine is also called as succus entericus. It contains various enzymes such as maltase dipepsidase, lipase nucleosidase along with hormones and mucus. Secretin and cholecystokinin (CCK) are gastrointestinal hormones which are secreted by the intestinal mucosa. These allow the proper digestion of food through succus entericus as both increase gastric secretion and motility. Cholecystokinin is released in response to the chyme. This enzyme then causes contraction of gall bladder which then releases bile. Bile then does emulsification of chyme. Secretin is released when chyme entering the intestine is highly acidic. It stimulates the pancreas to release bicarbonate into the duodenum in order to neutralize the potentially harmful acid coming from the stomach.
