  • Hormones which regulate the secretion of other endocrine glands are tropic hormones.

  • The tropic hormones from the pituitary gland play an important role in regulating the activity of most other endocrine glands.
  • Therefore, the pituitary gland is also known as master gland.
  • The tropic hormones are-
  1. Adrenocorticotropic hormone- stimulates the adrenal glands to secrete steroid hormones or cortisol.
  2. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) stimulates the thyroid glands and induces the secretion of thyroid hormones.
  3. Gonadotropin hormones:-
a) Luteinizing hormones (LH)- stimulates the release of steroid hormones from the sex organs (ovary and testes).
b) Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) – stimulates the maturation of eggs in females and production of spermatozoa or sperms in male.
