Solution

Classification:

  1. "Classification" refers to the process of organizing organisms into groups based on their similarities and dissimilarities in order to demonstrate their relationship.
  2. All living organisms are identified and categorized based on their bodily structure and function.

Types of classification:

  1. Artificial system of classification: This categorization system was based on one or a few superficial characteristics. The classification is based on habitat, number of plant parts (cotyledons), number of carpels and stamen (floral characters) and phenology.
  2. Natural system of classification: This categorization method was based on a greater number of characteristics accessible at the time of plant observation. It is based on natural affinities.
  3. Phylogenetic system of classification: This categorization method was based on the evolutionary sequence as well as the genetic link between the various plant groupings.

Based on the evolutionary relationships, every organism to be classified is given a category.

  1. The hierarchy of categories is the system of arranging taxonomic categories in descending order based on their relationships with other groups of organisms.
  2. This system was introduced by Linnaeus and is called the Linnaean hierarchy.
  3. There are seven main categories in the Linnaean hierarchy namely,

Kingdom
Division
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
