Question

How are animals helpful in the growth and regeneration of plants in the forests?

Solution

Animals play a significant role in the growth and regeneration of plants in the following ways:

  1. The forest floor is generally littered with the remains of creatures that have died and decayed.
  2. Decomposers degrade them into simple organic substances which are utilised by plants in the form of dark coloured substance, humus.
  3. Decomposers play an important role in maintaining the supply of nutrients to the growing plants in the forest.
  4. Different agents like birds, animals, wind and water disperse the seeds of different plants on the forest soil.
  5. The dispersed seeds derive nutrients from the soil and develop to form seedlings that finally grow to form the forest vegetation.
