The bacteria are classified on the basis of number and distribution of flagella into different types. The types are described as follows:
Atrichous: The bacterium does not possess a flagella.
Monotrichous: There is one flagella which is present at the extreme end of one pole.
Lophotrichous: There is bunch of flagella at one pole.
Amphitrichous: There are tow bunches of flagella at two opposite poles.
Peritrichous: There are flagella which are present on the cell wall surrounding the body of the bacterium in all the directions.
