Cities experience rapid industrialisation.

More than 65% of our total population belongs to the rural areas. The development strategies of India focused more on industrial growth in cities. Industries became bigger and more significant. On the other hand, small-scale industries in rural areas declined due to competition from the modern ones in cities. While cities boomed with employment opportunities, people from rural areas migrated to cities to find better jobs and higher income. With this, cities grew bigger and urbanisation spread. The cities became modernised and globalised, whereas people dependent on agriculture in the rural areas could not benefit much from any of these modernisation policies. They remained poor.
