Question

How are clouds charged?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The clouds contain water droplets in them.
  2. When these water droplets collide with the air molecules present in the atmosphere, it leads to the charging of the clouds.
  3. When the amount of charge on the clouds becomes extremely large, the air between the clouds gets ionised.
  4. Due to the ionisation, electrons flow from the negatively charged clouds to the positively charged ones in the form of flashes of light known as lightning.
  5. Thus, the charging of clouds further leads to lightning.
