Question

How are frequency and period related in simple harmonic motion?

Open in App
Solution

Simple harmonic motion

  1. Simple Harmonic Motion or SHM is defined as a motion in which the restoring force is directly proportional to the displacement of the body from its mean position.
  2. The direction of this restoring force is always towards the mean position.
  3. The period T is the time for one oscillation and the number of oscillations per unit time is the frequency f.
  4. These quantities are related to each other as follows:f=1T

Hence, frequency and time period are inversely proportional to each other.
