Question

How are γradiations produced? Mention two common properties of the gamma radiations and visible light.

Solution

Gamma radiation (γ) is produced when nucleus is in a state of excitation (i.e.,unstable state or it has an excess of energy). This extra energy is released in the form of electromagnetic radiation known as γ-radiation when it falls back to stable state.

Common properties of gamma radiations and visible light are:

i. Both are electromagnetic waves, they both can travel with the speed of 3×108ms1 in vacuum.
ii. Both are electrically neutral hence remain unaffected in electric and magnetic fields.
