Question

How are impurities removed from bauxite?

Open in App
Solution

Impurities from Bauxite can be removed by following steps:

  1. The Bauxite ore is first concentrated with the solution of caustic soda NaOH at 140°C-150°C.
  2. Aluminium oxide present in ore gives sodium meta aluminate while the impurities (red mud) are left behind.

Al2O3.2H2Os+2NaOHaq2NaAlO2aq+3H2OlBauxitesodiumhydroxidesodiummetawateraluminate

3. Ferric oxide and silica impurities are removed by filtration. The sodium meta aluminate is diluted with water so that it precipitates as aluminium hydroxide.

NaAlO2aq+2H2OlAlOH3s+NaOHaqaluminiumsodiumhydroxidehydroxide

4. The precipitate of Aluminium hydroxide is filtered, washed and ignited at 1000°C to form pure alumina.

2AlOH3sAl2O3s+3H2O(l)purealumina
