Question

How are linear velocity and angular velocity related?

Open in App
Solution

Linear velocity:

  1. When an object moves along a straight path, the linear velocity is defined as the rate at which its displacement changes with time.
  2. Every point on the circle has a different linear velocity.
  3. It is expressed as v and is measured in m/s.

Angular velocity:

  1. The rate at which the angular position of a rotating body changes is called angular velocity.
  2. It is represented by the Greek letter omega and is measured in degrees and radians.

Relation between Linear velocity(v) and angular velocity(ω):

  1. We can use the expression to link linear and rotational velocity in a uniform circulation motion v=rω where r is the radius of the circle.

Hence, angular velocity and linear velocity are directly proportional to each other.
