Question

How are major groove and a minor groove formed in DNA because the backbone is at constant distance from each other i.e.2nm?

Solution

It is due to the angle of interaction between base pairs result in major and minor grooves instead of the distance of backbone of DNA from each other. The helix diameter is 20 Ao and helix rise per base pair is 3.32 Ao. Also the base pair tilt to 6o angle which is the reason of forming minor and major grooves.
