Question

How are Metamorphic rocks formed?

Open in App
Solution

Metamorphic rocks are generated when a rock undergoes a series of physical changes over time, such as pressure, heat, and chemical activity. When sedimentary or igneous rocks are exposed to pressure, heat, or tectonic plate movement at plate margins, they undergo physical changes. When these rocks are exposed to the environment, they undergo modifications.

Characteristics of metamorphic rocks

  • Cataclastic metamorphism occurs in conjunction with tectonic plate faults, when the rocks rub against each other, reducing the grain size.
  • These rocks are categorised as low-grade transformations since they are unable to generate non-foliated rock.
  • The movement of rock causes a large number of chemical reactions in mineral water, resulting in a variety of precious metals and stones.
