Question

How are Oxygen and Carbon dioxide prepared in the laboratory?

Open in App
Solution

Preparation of Oxygen:

  • At the laboratory level, Hydrogen peroxide is used for the preparation of Oxygen gas.
  • Hydrogen peroxide(H2O2) in the presence of finely divided metals and Manganese dioxide(MnO2) decomposes to give Water(H2O) and Dioxygen(O2).
  • 2H2O2(aq)HydrogenperoxideMnO2(s)2H2O(l)Water+O2(g)Oxygen

Preparation of Carbon dioxide:

  • Carbon dioxide is prepared in the lab using Calcium Carbonate(CaCO3) and dil. Hydrochloric acid(HCl).
  • The reaction of Calcium Carbonate(CaCO3) and dil. Hydrochloric acid(HCl) result in formation of Carbon dioxide(CO2), Water(H2O) and Calcium chloride(CaCl2).
  • CaCO3(s)Calciumcarbonate+HCl(aq)HydrogenchlorideCaCl2(s)Calciumchloride+CO2(g)Carbondioxide+H2O(l)Water
