How are photosynthesis and photorespiration different?

Open in App
Solution

Photosynthesis:

  1. Photosynthesis is a process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize nutrients from carbon dioxide and water.

Photorespiration:

  1. Respiration is the process by which plants take in oxygen from light and release some carbon dioxide, in contrast to the normal pattern of photosynthesis.
PhotosynthesisPhotorespiration
Occurs in plants.Occurs in many higher plants.
Require sunlight, oxygen, and water.Involves oxygen intake with the release of some carbon dioxide.
Release oxygen and energy (sugar).Reduces efficiency of photosynthesis.
RuBisCO enzyme reacts with carbon dioxide.RuBisCO enzyme reaction occurs with oxygen.
