Question

How are RBCs adapted for carrying oxygen?

Open in App
Solution

Red blood cells(RBCs)

  1. Red blood cells (RBCs) are also called erythrocytes. These cells in the blood are capable of carrying oxygen.

Adaptations of RBCs for carrying oxygen

  1. Mature mammalian RBCs lack a nucleus and other cell organelles. This increases the surface area for carrying oxygen.
  2. Lack of mitochondria ensures that the RBCs do not use oxygen for themselves and efficiently transport it to other organs.
  3. RBCs contain the pigment haemoglobin which can bind oxygen and is the most important adaptation of RBCs that enables them to carry oxygen.
