Ethers are anhydrides of alcohols. They can be prepared by the action of diazomethane on alcohols. This reaction takes place in presence of catalyst, fluoroboric acid (HBF4).
Simple ethers: Methyl alcohol react with diazomethane in presence of catalyst fluoroboric acid to give dimethyl ether.
CH3OHMethanol+CH2N2DiazomethaneHBF4→ΔCH3OCH3MethoxyMethane+N2↑
Mixed ethers: Ethyl alcohol and phenol react with diazomethane in the presence of catalyst fluoroboric acid to give mixed ether, i.e., Ethyl methyl ether and methyoxy benzene.
C2H5OHEthanol+CH2N2DiazomethaneHBF4→ΔC2H5OCH3EthylMethylether+N2↑
C6H5OHPhenol +CH2N2Diazomethane HBF4→Δ C6H5OCH3Methoxybenzene+N2↑
