Question

How are simple ethers and mixed ethers prepared using diazomethane?

Open in App
Solution

Ethers are anhydrides of alcohols. They can be prepared by the action of diazomethane on alcohols. This reaction takes place in presence of catalyst, fluoroboric acid (HBF4).
Simple ethers: Methyl alcohol react with diazomethane in presence of catalyst fluoroboric acid to give dimethyl ether.
CH3OHMethanol+CH2N2DiazomethaneHBF4ΔCH3OCH3MethoxyMethane+N2
Mixed ethers: Ethyl alcohol and phenol react with diazomethane in the presence of catalyst fluoroboric acid to give mixed ether, i.e., Ethyl methyl ether and methyoxy benzene.
C2H5OHEthanol+CH2N2DiazomethaneHBF4ΔC2H5OCH3EthylMethylether+N2
C6H5OHPhenol +CH2N2Diazomethane HBF4Δ C6H5OCH3Methoxybenzene+N2
