Question

How are simple tissues different from complex tissues in plants?

Open in App
Solution

Simple tissues:

  1. Simple tissues consist of cells that are structurally and functionally similar.
  2. They are made up of only one type of cell.
  3. Simple tissues are of three types namely parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma.
  4. Parenchyma – they are living cells and walled, soft due to the presence of thin-walled cells.
  5. Collenchyma – These are characterized by uneven thick-walled living cells.
  6. Sclerenchyma – They have cells with thickened lignified walls, providing them strength and making them waterproof.

Complex tissues:

  1. Complex tissues are those tissues that comprise more than one type of cell, varying cells that are involved in performing a dedicated function.
  2. These cells work together as a combined unit to perform a specific function.
  3. Complex tissues bring about the transportation of water, and organic minerals, up and down the plants.
  4. The two types of complex tissues are: Xylem and Phloem.
  5. Xylem conducts water and minerals from the soil to different parts of a plant.
  6. Phloem conducts prepared food from the leaves to all the parts of a plant.

Difference between simple tissues and complex tissues:

Simple tissuesComplex tissues
1. Simple tissues are made up of only one type of cell, which looks like each other. 1. Complex tissues are made up of more than one type of cell.
2. It is homogeneous.2. It is heterogeneius.
3. Main functions are repair of tissue, food storage, secretion, and structural support.3. Main function is the conduction of minerals and water to various parts of the plant body.
4. Located in every part of the plant.4. Primarily located in the vascular regions.
5. Composed of a single type of cell/ all cells perform a similar function.5. Composed of various types of cells that perform various functions.
2. Parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma are examples of simple plant tissue.2. Xylem and phloem are examples of complex tissue.
