  • The suffix " ous " is used to present the lower valency of an element.
  • The suffix “ ic ” is used to present the higher valency of an element.
  • For example, the ferrous oxide (Fe2+) here, the valency of iron is +2, whereas in ferric oxide (Fe3+) the valency of iron is +3.
