How are the following mixture separated

Sugar and sand

Open in App
Solution

Different separation techniques are present depending on the property of the substances to be separated

  • Sugar and sand can be removed by putting the mixture in water and then stirring it
  • Sugar will dissolve in water whereas sand will not
  • This mixture now can be poured into a filter paper, sand will be filtered which can be removed and sugar which is dissolved in the solution can be recovered using evaporation and crystallisation
  • We can heat the sugar solution and allow it to cool, and then crystals of sugar appeared.
  • So, first, use filtration by dissolving in water and then crystallisation or evaporation to separate sugar and sand.
