Sanitation and disease are inexorably related. Lack of hygiene and sanitation practices causes disease. Infact, a look at the Indian scenario is appalling. Out of 1.2 billion people, 49.8% defecate in the open mostly on the fields and railway tracks. PM Modi’s war cry on installing a toilet per home could not have come more at the right time .Faecal matter left untreated becomes a host to many diseases like cholera, typhoid, hepatitis, dysentery. Sometimes these infections become fatal and lead to death. Faecal matter also pollute soil and infect ground water. Infected water nourish pathogens and we fall ill after its use.
