Respiratory volumes:

  1. The amount of air present in the lungs is known as lung capacity.
  2. It can be measured with the help of a spirometer.
  3. Tidal volume (TV) is the amount of air that moves in and out of the lungs when normal breathing occurs.
  4. On average, its value is 500ml.
  5. The inspiratory reserve volume or IRV is the amount of air that can be inhaled after normal respiration occurs.
  6. On average, its value is 3000ml.
  7. Tidal volume (TV) and inspiratory reserve volume (IRV) are related as IRV = IC – TV. Here, IC represents inspiratory capacity.
