How are traits passed onto the next generation?

Open in App
Solution

Law of inheritance

  1. The Law of Inheritance is important in understanding how characteristics or traits are genetically passed down from generation to generation.
  2. Heredity is the process by which a new individual inherits characteristics from its parents during the process of reproduction.
  3. Every person has 22 pairs of chromosomes, one each from the father and mother.
  4. Because genes are found on chromosomes, we receive two copies of each gene from our paternal and maternal sides.
  5. The rules of heredity govern the traits acquired through inheritance.
  6. These characteristics are encoded in our DNA and can thus be passed down to our descendants (eye color, hair color, height, etc)
