Solution

Decomposition of waste

  1. Wastes are categorized into two types- biodegradable and non-biodegradable.
  2. Depending on the type of waste, there are different methods of decomposition as follows:
  1. Landfill- The waste is spread as a thin layer in low-lying areas and a layer of soil is added on the top and the waste is allowed to decompose.
  2. Incineration- It is the process of controlled combustion of garbage and the heat generated in this process is used to produce electricity.
  3. Waste Compaction- The waste is compacted into blocks and then sent for recycling.
  4. Biogas Generation- Biodegradable waste is converted to biogas and residual manure by degradation with microorganisms.
  5. Composting- Organic wastes are buried under the soil and allowed to decay with microorganisms to enrich the soil with the compost formed.
  6. Vermicomposting- It is the process of using worms for degrading organic matter into nutrient-rich manure.
